For years, “Brazilian” Keratin Straightening products have been used in hair salons around the world to relaxed tight curls and reduce frizziness in even looser curls. The products were seen as a godsend to women with unruly curls and would “straighten” hair while keeping some body and attractive waviness. Recently, however, concerns have been raised about the safety of these products.
OSHA Issues Hazard Alert for straighteners
In April, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued “a hazard alert to hair salon owners and workers about potential formaldehyde exposure to working with some hair smoothing and straightening products”. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen which presents a health hazard to people who are exposed to it.
Even products labeled “formaldehyde free” have unhealthy levels of the chemical
Federal OSHA representatives have found formaldehyde in the air when hair stylists used hair smoothing products, even though the product tested was labeled as “formaldehyde free”.
Pavlova Salon puts clients first
While we acknowledge the positive effects the “Brazilian” Keratin Straightening hair care products can have on our client’s hair, we are more concerned with their long-term health of our clients. To protect your health, Long Island’s Pavlova Salon ceased using keratin straighteners in our salons in Saint James as soon as we learned of the potential negative effects.
We finally found it!
After an exhaustive search and extensive testing, Pavlova Salons is pleased to announce that we have located a 100% formaldehyde free keratin system that we are now happy to offer our clients in our St. James, NY location.
